Grahan (or eclipse) is the event when one heavenly body covers the other heavenly body partially or completely by dropping its shade on the other one. The latter becomes the obstacle in the path of the former. Grahan can be any of the two types namely Surya Grahan or Chandra Grahan. In Surya Grahan or Solar eclipse the Moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun; whereas, in Chandra Grahan or Lunar eclipse, the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon.

The story behind Surya Grahan or Chandra Grahan is famous from the time of Samudra Manthan or we can say when the roiling of the milk ocean was done by the deities and the demons for the immortality liquid and bringing everything back to life. When the immortality liquid came out of the ocean, devils stole it . But, Lord Vishnu got it back and started distributing it among the deities. One of the demon, named Rahu played a trick, as he sat near the Chandra and Surya and had the immortality liquid. Lord Vishnu got angry and cut off Rahu’s head. Since then it is believed that Rahu takes his revenge from Surya and Chandra for revealing his identity and that is the reason why Grahan takes place.
Sutak is also an important fact to be discussed while we talk about the Surya Grahan or Chandra Grahan. Sutak Kaal may be understood as the time period of Grahan which is considered as very unfavourable for any type of fortunate work. The time of Sutak starts from 12 hours after the Grahan starts. There are some precautions that should be taken during Sutak Kaal.
