What is Grahan?

Grahan (or eclipse) is the event when one heavenly body covers the other heavenly body partially or completely by dropping its shade on the other. The story behind Chandra Grahan is famous from the times of Samudra Manthan or when rolling of the milk ocean was done by deities and demons for the immortality liquid (Amrit) and bringing everything to its existence. When immortality liquid came out of the ocean, the devils stole it . But, Lord Vishnu turned himself into Mohini and got the Amrit back. After this he started distributing it among the deities. One of the demon, named Rahu played a trick; he sat near Chandra and Surya and had the immortality liquid. Lord Vishnu got angry and cut off his head. But, Rahu did not die due to the Amrit he had taken and lived in the form of snake. Since then it is believed that Rahu take his revenge from Surya And Chandra for revealing his identity at that time and that is why the Grahan takes place.

The Sutak Kaal during Grahan:

Sutak is also an important matter while we talk about the Grahan. Sutak may be understood as the time period of the Grahan which is considered as very unfavourable for every kind of fortunate work. The time of Sutak will be for 9 hours for Chandra Grahan.There are some precautions that should be taken during Grahan and Sutak Kaal.

Precautions during the Grahan:

• Eating and drinking should be avoided during this time.
• Food items should not be left in open during Grahan.
• Combing your hair and brushing up your teeth should be avoided during Grahan.
• Pregnant women should not come outside during Grahan, as it is considered dangerous for their babies.
• Contemplations should be done during Grahan.
• Temples should be closed while Grahan goes on and no one should touch the idols also.
