Amavasya is a no moon day or new moon day and is also famous as Amavasi. As per Hindu calendar, it occurs when the moon is not visible in the sky and falls on the first night in the first quarter of the lunar month. This day has great importance for Hindus, as on this day only the believers make benefaction to their departed forefathers. This creates confusion in the mind of people to consider Amavasya as favorable or unfavorable. Shukla Paksha is the name given to the fortnight that starts with Amavasya. Some auspicious Amavasyas that have a great significance in the life of devotees are Mauni Amavasya falling in the Hindu Magh month (January - February) and the other one is Mahalya Amavasya occurring in the month of Ashwayuja (September - October). In Tamil Nadu, Amavasi falling in the month of Aadi is considered to be very important and propitious.
